In an unexpected twist of events, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII was announced for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate during the Game Awards 2020. Many people speculated that Sora from Kingdom Hearts would be the next character. That rumor has been put to sleep for now. The trailer was pretty brief but we did get to see gameplay of Sephiroth in action. Hopefully we get a full Nintendo Direct soon to break down everything he can do and an actual release date for him.
