The Steam Frame is real, it’s $1,059, and YouTube is currently a firehose of spec videos. But the detail that will matter most in five years isn’t in any of them. A few weeks ago, Valve hired Amanda Watson, and if you know who that is, you already understand what this headset is trying to be.
Watson created Air Link at Meta. That’s the feature that made wireless PC VR streaming actually work, turning “tethered to a $2,000 rig” from a requirement into an option. When the Steam Frame’s whole pitch is beaming your PC library to a standalone headset with a dedicated wireless link and eye-tracked foveated streaming , there is literally no one on the planet with more directly relevant experience. Rather than hiring someone just to study the problem, Valve brought on the person who had already solved it at scale.
Then there’s the part that makes this more than a streaming hire. In her spare time, Watson built CitraVR, a native Quest port of the Citra 3DS emulator that rendered the top screen in real stereoscopic 3D, shipped fully GPL compliant, and lived entirely outside Meta’s store. She described it not as an emulator but as “an educational resource for VR developers.” I even wrote about how amazing the tech was in an article a few months back.
Read those two facts together and the significance writes itself. The Frame runs an ARM version of SteamOS, not a locked storefront, and Valve is openly courting the PC crowd that treats sideloading as a feature, not a bug. Hiring Watson says Valve wants the wireless experience to be invisible and the ecosystem to be open, two things she’s already proven she can build.
Which brings us back to why this hire matters more than the headset. Valve could have shipped the Frame with great hardware and a closed store and called it a day. Instead they hired the one engineer who’s spent years proving VR gets better when it’s open, and they did it quietly, weeks before launch, with no press release. Specs can be matched by next quarter. Nobody else has the engineer who invented this category’s best trick, and that’s the edge the Frame just bought.
