I got introduced to Bree Runway a few days ago and I was happy with what she had to offer both musically and visually. The single What Do I Tell My Friends? is a midtempo synthpop track with beautiful and lush production. Her harmonies sounded rich and lavish. The video however is quite dark. It starts pretty harmless at first but then it takes a really dark turn. There’s so much subtext in this video dealing with fetishizing black women, male gaze, the treatment of models in the fashion industry, rape, consent, and so many other social issues. I won’t spoil the video but it is definitely interesting, provocative and thought-provoking.
