Indie Developer Free has released their second project E’s Laf Double Cross or E’s Laf++ to early access. This 2D Anime Fighter was inspired by such games as BlazBlue and Guilty Gear. It has a very eye-catching visual aesthetic. It looks like the characters are hand-painted. It’s quite unique.
The gameplay is similar to your traditional anime fighter. There’s airdashing, gatlings (chain combos), super moves and their own proprietary systems: Accumulation and Fatal Shift. Accumulation is a way to skip the natural order of the Gatling. For example, in a normal Gatling sequence, you would use 5A > 5B > 5C > 5D. But if you decide to skip the order and use 5A > 5C / 5D, that isn’t a natural combo string. But using Accumulation, you can use 5A > 5A > 5C.
The other proprietary system is Fatal Shift. By using one bar of meter you can turn certain moves into automatic counter hits. It is similar to Guilty Gear’s Roman Cancels. This system has several applications:
At present the game has eight playable characters. More enhancements and tweaks will be made to the game before it gets officially released on Steam. Right now, if you want to contribute to the project, become a patron on Free’s patreon. You can download a free demo of the game on the official website. The demo includes local versus, training, and three playable characters (Main, Sisca, Qdora.)
In the meantime, check out this insane combo video:
