On that day, the world was introduced to Hollow Knight: Silksong. As the follow-up to one of the most critically acclaimed indie darlings of its time, Silksong had a lot of hype behind it. I mean, a LOT. The trailer looked great, and hopes were high, but we immediately noticed something: there was no release date. At the time, that was okay. We were content to wait and let the developers perfect the game.
Then began what was, like no game before or since, the most brain-rotting six-year wait ever seen. Every time any company put out a Direct-style video—especially if it was indie-focused—a dedicated fanbase tuned in, hoping for a shred of Silksong news. It became so common that the ritual became akin to putting on clown makeup.
Hopes were raised again on June 12, 2022, when another Silksong trailer appeared during an Xbox Showcase. It promised that every game shown would be playable within the next 12 months. Once again, the Silksong faithful had hope… and once again, it was a lie. All of 2022 came and went, and fans were no closer to playing the game. There would be the occasional tweet or picture, but nothing concrete.
Then, on June 8, 2025, our hopes were raised once more as Silksong appeared at another Xbox Showcase. The fanbase was hopeful, yet a deep-seated skepticism, born from years of shattered expectations, lingered beneath the surface. Thankfully, no specific promises were made. Though that didn’t stop fans from speculating. Since it was shown alongside the announcement of the Xbox ROG Ally, many hypothesized it would release alongside the new console. It wasn’t concrete, but it was something to hope for.
That all brings us to today. Two days ago, a video premiere appeared on Team Cherry’s YouTube channel: a “special Silksong announcement.” Would it be another announcement for an announcement? An apology? A developer insight video?
It was a release date. September 4th—just two weeks from the time of writing. After six years of waiting, we are a mere two weeks away. Silksong is finally real, and we are so close to playing it. Finally, we can take off the clown makeup.
