Nihon Falcom hosted a special livestream to celebrate the release of Ys Memoire Oath In Felghana(Switch) in Japan. The livestream also featured some exciting information regarding the tenth installment of the Ys series, Ys X: Nordics, which is set to be released in 2023 on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. We got some clips from the event thanks to the amazing Hansuke on twitter.
Ys X: Nordics is a direct sequel to Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished – The Final Chapter, featuring Adol Christin, Dogi, and Dr. Flair Rall, who are on their way to Celceta. The game is set in Obelia Bay, a bay filled with countless islands located north of Ispani and west of Gllia. Adol will encounter two factions, the “Normans” and the “Griegers,” and will team up with Carja Balta, a Norman pirate who is the same age as Adol, in the prologue of the game.
The game’s setting and environments are based on Normandy in France, in particular, the Cotentin Peninsula. The story will be aimed towards a younger audience, revolving around the concept of “family,” making it a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch’s younger player base.
Gameplay: Mobility
Another exciting feature is the Mana Actions system, which includes two new actions: Mana String and Mana Ride. The Mana String action stretches a string of mana from an antique known as Nornir’s Spinning Wheel, allowing the player to travel to a distant point, similar to a rope. The Mana Ride action allows the player to ride on the Grimble Board, which lifts them off the ground and allows them to glide. Both actions can be improved as the game progresses.
Gameplay: Ship Battles
One of the exciting new features in Ys X: Nordics is the Naval Combat system, which allows players to steer a ship across the ocean and engage in sea battles. Approximately 20% of the game will feature naval combat, and a special ocean chart/map will be provided for sea exploration. The spacing between the player and the enemy ships, as well as the type of cannonballs used, will be crucial in achieving victory. The player’s ship can be upgraded and will feature both a “manual” and a “high-speed mode.”
Gameplay: Combat
Ys X: Nordics also features a new Cross Action system, which allows the player to fight using two modes that can be interchanged by the press of a button. The Solo Mode is a fast-paced system that utilizes step and dash-based movement, where the player controls one character with their partner being controlled by AI. The Combination Mode generates more powerful, albeit slower, simultaneous attacks by using the two characters tethered to each other.
Gameplay: Dialogue Scene
Ys X: Nordics is shaping up to be an exciting addition to the Ys series. With its new features, such as Naval Combat, Mana Actions, and the Cross Action system, it is sure to please both old and new fans alike. The Live Stream is a perfect opportunity for fans to learn more about the game and get excited about its release in 2023.
