Announced during Kyle Higgins’ spotlight panel at C2E2, Immortal Legend Batman is set to take the Caped Crusader far beyond the streets of Gotham—and into the stars. A six-issue limited series launching August 27 under DC’s Elseworlds banner, the project brings together an impressive creative team: Kyle Higgins (Radiant Black), Mat Groom (Inferno Girl Red), Dan Mora (Batman/Superman: World’s Finest), Erica D’Urso, Igor Monti, and Becca Carey.
The surprise announcement instantly grabbed attention—not just for its high-caliber creators, but for its radically different approach to the Batman mythos. For years, Gotham has felt narratively tapped out, particularly in the wake of the New 52 and Zack Snyder’s cinematic influence. While Batman remains a cultural icon, many fans have been craving a bold reimagining. This, finally, might be it.
Drawing inspiration from Japanese tokusatsu like Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, combined with the cosmic sweep of classic sci-fi and the mythic flair of Westerns, Immortal Legend Batman blends disparate influences into something intriguingly new. In fact, the vibe feels closer to Batman Beyond than The Dark Knight Returns—and that’s a refreshing change.
Set centuries into the future, humanity has colonized the stars using dark matter to warp space-time—only to accidentally unleash destructive creatures called Shadows. To counter them, three warriors—Immortal Legend Batman, Robin, and Nightwing—tap into the same energy source to become galactic defenders.
For someone unfamiliar with Higgins or Groom’s previous indie work, this Elseworlds entry feels like an accessible way to dive into their vision. Their love of tokusatsu is clearly a driving force, and while the designs and premise are striking, there’s real thematic potential in taking Batman from the alleyways of Gotham to the edge of known space.
The creative decision to reframe the Bat-Family through this mythological sci-fi lens is more than just aesthetic—it’s an opportunity. For over 60 years, we’ve had well-established versions of Bruce, Dick, and Damian. Reinvention doesn’t just feel welcome; it feels necessary.
Projects like Immortal Legend Batman underscore why Elseworlds and alternate universe stories remain vital. Not every reader wants to dive into the dense lore of current continuity. Stories like this offer an on-ramp for new fans—or a fresh escape for long-timers burned out on endless reboots. Much like the recently launched Absolute Universe, it offers a new canon to get excited about.
Preorders for Immortal Legend Batman begin May 23 at comic shops and digital platforms. If the cover art and concept sketches are any indication, this will be one of the most visually and thematically unique Batman stories in years.
